Ready to discover a hidden gem near Warsaw? This is Zbiornik Mokre Łąki. It is more than just a body of water. It’s a testament to ecological balance.

Zbiornik Mokre Łąki is an artificial lake. Its creation started in 2005 and finished in 2007. It shows how humans and nature can work together. You see, this lake owes its existence to the nearby “Mokre Łąki” sewage treatment plant.

Let’s rewind a bit. In the 90s planners considered how to manage water flow into Kampinos National Park. They realized the waters would flow into the Zaborowski Canal and then into the Łasica Canal. These canals run through much of the park.

Kampinos National Park authorities set a high standard. They demanded the treated wastewater meet the second class of water purity. To meet this requirement, the Zbiornik Mokre Łąki was built.

The reservoir helps maintain proper water levels in the area. This counteracts the effects of 19th-century land reclamation. Those projects lowered groundwater levels harming wetland habitats. Zbiornik Mokre Łąki helps stabilize the water table. This is especially important because the area is susceptible to droughts and floods.

The reservoir acts like a polder during heavy rains. In 2011, it prevented major flooding in Izabelin. However, that same year, heavy rains caused a problem. The treatment plant couldn’t handle the excess water. Authorities released 1,200 cubic meters of sewage into Kampinos National Park. A later inspection found this action was legal.

Despite this incident, Zbiornik Mokre Łąki plays a vital role in local ecology. It has become a haven for diverse bird species. Wetland birds thrive here. You might spot a coot, garganey, moorhen or mute swan. The variable water levels attract birds. Species like the lapwing, snipe, corncrake and crane also visit the site. Migratory birds such as geese and waders stop here too.

Amphibians also breed here. Common toads, marsh frogs, and water frogs all call this place home.

Interestingly, the reservoir is almost entirely fed by water from the sewage plant. Yet, it maintains the second class of water purity. Fish thrive in these waters.

Mokre Łąki has become a local favorite. People come to see diverse wildlife. You might see various waterfowl. Lucky visitors spot forest animals too.

Mokre Łąki exemplifies ecological adaptation. Animals quickly adjusted to new conditions after the lake’s creation. It is a place where you can observe water birds not far from Warsaw.

As you stand here remember its dual purpose. Zbiornik Mokre Łąki protects the environment and provides a sanctuary. It shows us how thoughtful engineering can benefit both people and nature.
