Why is Zangtogpelri Lhakhang called “Heaven on Earth”? Zangtogpelri Lhakhang, nestled in Thimphu, Bhutan, offers a glimpse into a heavenly realm. Built in the 1990s by Dasho Aku Tongmi, the composer of Bhutan’s national anthem, this Buddhist temple is more than just a place of worship. It’s a vibrant representation of Guru Rinpoche’s celestial abode. The three-storied structure pulsates with color and intricate detail. The walls are adorned with murals depicting the life of Buddha. On the ground floor, statues of Guru Rinpoche’s eight manifestations capture key moments of his life. Ascend to the upper floor to find the eight Bodhisattvas of Avalokiteshvara and Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal. The top floor houses the majestic statue of Amitabha. Zangtogpelri Lhakhang’s beauty extends beyond its walls. Outside, a meticulously manicured garden, encircled by miniature prayer wheels, offers a tranquil space for reflection. Adjacent to Zangtogpelri Lhakhang is the older Mani Dungkhar Lhakhang. This structure houses enormous prayer wheels. Between the two, an elephant skull rests in a box, a relic unearthed during the construction of Zangtogpelri Lhakhang. This unique discovery adds another layer of intrigue to this already fascinating site. Zangtogpelri Lhakhang is a must-see for any visitor to Thimphu, offering a blend of history, art, and spiritual significance.
