Picture this. A colossal brick structure stands before you. This is the Zanders Kraftwerk in Cologne. Its imposing presence speaks volumes of industrial might. It’s more than just a power plant. It’s a testament to a bygone era of German ingenuity.

The Zanders Kraftwerk wasn’t built overnight. It was the vision of Johann Wilhelm Zanders. He was the eldest son of Hans Wilhelm Zanders. In 1931 his vision became reality. The Kraftwerk secured Zanders’ future. It also fueled the advancement of paper production.

Four remarkable individuals shaped this landmark. Architect Dominikus Bohm designed it. The firm Wilhelm Eckardt & Ernst Hotop GmbH oversaw its construction. Their expertise is still evident today. Though many newer structures now surround it the Kraftwerk’s towering chimneys remain. They dominate the Cologne skyline. They are a lasting symbol of Zanders’ legacy.

The Kraftwerk wasn’t isolated then. It sat amongst the paper mill. The Stoffaufbereitung building stood opposite. Today however. The Kraftwerk is surrounded by more modern factory buildings. The original design is hard to see. Historic photos reveal its stark beauty. Its red-brown bricks give it a sturdy look. Its style reflects the “Neue Sachlichkeit” or New Objectivity movement. This style emphasized functionality.

The main section is a tall vertical structure. Its gabled windows emphasize its height. The windows vary in design. Some are small squares. Others are long horizontal bands of glass. The building’s closed-off nature reflects the need to contain the machinery inside.

Attached are two lower rectangular sections. They too are punctuated by windows. The larger one houses the turbine hall. Here high-pressure steam from the boilers powered the turbines. This steam then went to the mill. It was used for heating. It also helped boil straw and dry the paper.

Daily the Kraftwerk’s two enormous boilers consumed 480 tons of brown coal. An additional oil boiler needed 50 tons of fuel oil. They produced 1400 tons of steam. The turbines generated 200000 kWh of electricity. The interior remains imposing. Huge steam boilers stand alongside a steel and concrete framework. Coal bunkers are above the boilers.

In 1953 a significant change occurred. A new building was added. It housed the control room and workshops. In 1962/63 a new boiler system was installed. In 1975 an electrofilter was added. This cleaned the smoke from the coal-fired boilers.

Two tall chimneys stand beside the Kraftwerk. They are landmarks. They also represent the mill’s role in the city’s history. Many in Cologne worked at Zanders. These chimneys served as symbols of the city’s industrial heart. The “old chimney” was built in 1900. It was rebuilt in 1921 and raised higher in 1935. The “new chimney” was added between 1911 and 1914. It too was completely rebuilt in the early 1960s. Both are now protected monuments. They are reminders of Zanders’ enduring impact on Cologne. They will tower over the new city district being built on the old paper mill site.

The Zanders Kraftwerk is more than just an old power plant. It’s a symbol. It stands for innovation. It speaks of the industrial spirit of Cologne. It’s a powerful reminder of the past. Yet it also hints at the future. This power plant deserves to be seen. It deserves to be remembered.
