On a crisp autumn day in 1710, imagine standing right here. You would have witnessed the final touches being put on a grand residence. This, my friends, is Zámek Práce, or Práce Chateau. Zámek Práce wasn’t always a chateau. It rose from the remnants of a 1407 fortress. That fortress had fallen into disrepair and was documented as abandoned by 1597. The Dominican Order, based in the Lesser Town’s St. Mary Magdalene Monastery, chose this picturesque spot to build their new retreat. Thus, Zámek Práce was born. The Dominicans spared no expense. They even established a brewery, a water mill, and a fishpond. This ensured they had everything they needed for a comfortable existence. However, their peaceful reign ended in 1784 with the dissolution of monasteries under Emperor Joseph II. The Meissler family acquired Zámek Práce, holding onto it until 1867. Over the years, Zámek Práce underwent several transformations. It was remodeled in the late 19th century and again in the early 20th century. Architect František Václavík redesigned the building in 1905-1910. His work gave it the stately charm that we see today. Although privately owned, Zámek Práce stands as a testament to the changing tides of history. It’s a silent sentinel. It whispers tales of monks, noble families, and architectural grandeur.
