Can you picture a medieval fortress standing right here where we are at Zámek Kunratice? It’s hard to believe now, but this grand chateau has humble beginnings. Zámek Kunratice started its life as a fortress, first mentioned in records dating back to 1336. Even King Wenceslas IV, a prominent figure in Czech history, once held ownership of this land.

Fast forward to 1688. A man named František Václav Čabelický ze Soutic decided to make his mark. He transformed the old fortress into the stunning Baroque-style chateau you see before you. Over the decades, Zámek Kunratice changed hands and underwent various renovations. Around 1730 it got a Baroque makeover. Later, in the mid-18th century, it took on a more neoclassical style.

There’s a charming detail added in 1878 that you might not notice right away – a clock tower. See if you can spot it gracing the north side. Despite its elegance, Zámek Kunratice has seen turbulent times. After World War II, it was confiscated and eventually housed the entomological department of the National Museum. Since 2014 it has stood empty, awaiting its next chapter. But there’s hope! A new owner purchased this historical treasure in early 2024, and with that comes the promise of a grand reconstruction. This magnificent chateau will soon have its time to shine again.
