A shiver runs down your spine. You stand before the remnants of Prague’s fortifications. These ancient walls whisper tales of sieges and survival. They stand as silent witnesses to centuries of history.

The Základ y hradeb represent a crucial part of Prague’s defenses. These fortifications evolved over time. Early versions were simple wooden and clay ramparts. Later more sophisticated brick walls were built during the reign of Charles IV. The most famous section is the Hunger Wall. This protected Malá Strana. Legend says Charles IV employed the poor to build it. This provided them with much needed work.

Despite these mighty walls Prague was not always safe. The Hussites breached them. The Swedes did too at the end of the Thirty Years’ War. Emperor Ferdinand III responded. He constructed a new 14-kilometer fortification system. It had nine gates and thirty bastions. Prague was declared a fortress.

Even this impressive system failed to offer complete protection. In the early 1740s a coalition army attacked. Bavarians Saxons and French soldiers besieged the city. Under Maurice of Saxony the city fell. It remained occupied for over a year. In 1866 the Prussians captured Prague without a fight. Emperor Franz Joseph I ordered the demolition of the walls.

The demolition began in 1874 and continued into the 1920s. It was never fully completed. Parts of the walls remain. For instance sections near Vyšehrad still stand. They provide breathtaking views of the city.

Today as you gaze upon the Základ y hradeb imagine the lives touched by these walls. Imagine the soldiers who defended them. Imagine the laborers who built them. These are not just stones. They are the foundations of a city’s enduring spirit. A testament to Prague’s resilience. A legacy that continues to resonate. The Základ y hradeb stand as a powerful symbol of Prague’s rich and complex past. Their stones speak volumes. Listen closely.
