During the dark days of World War II, this seemingly ordinary spot held a much darker significance. The Zakład Zbrojeniowy Waverma Plaque, placed here in 2008, marks the site of a former branch of the “Ursus” factory that was seized by the Nazis. They transformed it into a grim testament to their war machine, the Zakład Zbrojeniowy “Waverma” armament factory. Imagine the fear and despair that hung heavy in the air as young Jewish machinists were forced to work day and night within those very walls. Torn from the nearby ghetto and brought here under constant threat, these skilled workers clung to a sliver of hope. They believed their technical expertise, along with the clandestine help of Polish and German supervisors, might just offer a shield against the horrors unfolding around them. Tragically, their hope was shattered. Despite the pleas of the factory’s German management, the SS and German police stormed the factory in February 1943, rounding up the Jewish workers. They were transported to the Treblinka extermination camp and murdered. The Zakład Zbrojeniowy Waverma Plaque stands as a solemn reminder of their tragic fate, a stark reminder of the horrors inflicted in the name of hatred and war. Remember their stories, honor their memory, and vow to never forget the lessons etched in stone before you.
