Yurigaoka, nestled in Kawasaki’s Asao Ward, whispers tales from a time long before bustling train stations and housing developments. Imagine a time when the Goldband lily, Kanagawa Prefecture’s official flower, blanketed the hillsides. Its golden hues inspired the name “Yurigaoka”, a legacy from a more tranquil era. Today, traces of that natural beauty remain, adding a touch of serenity to the urban landscape.
Yurigaoka isn’t just a pretty name. It’s a place where the past intersects with the present. In 1913, a fossilized tooth from a Parastegodon, a relative of the Stegodon, was unearthed in what is now Yurigaoka 2-19. This discovery transported us back to the late Pliocene period when much of modern-day Kawasaki was submerged. The Parastegodon tooth suggests that Yurigaoka stood as a coastal haven, perhaps even a shoreline.
Centuries later, during the Yayoi period, the fertile lands of Yurigaoka provided sustenance for early inhabitants. They cultivated rice paddies, their lives intertwined with the rhythms of the seasons. Around the 8th century, the area became known for its high-quality hemp. This valuable crop was presented as tribute to the Japanese Imperial Court, establishing Yurigaoka’s connection to the nation’s history.
Fast forward to the 1950s. Yurigaoka underwent a transformation with the development of the Yurigaoka Danchi housing project. This marked a new chapter in the area’s growth. The completion of Yurigaoka Station in 1960 further fueled the population boom. Today, Yurigaoka continues to evolve. From the bustling shopping streets in the north to the Yurigaoka Danchi in the south, this vibrant neighborhood embodies the dynamism of modern Japan. Kōbō no matsu Park, reaching an elevation of 117.8 meters above sea level, offers panoramic views. Located in Yurigaoka 2-10, opposite the Yurigaoka Catholic Church, the park provides a peaceful respite within the city’s embrace.
