Beneath the vibrant tapestry of Hong Kong’s outlying islands lies a hidden marvel of modern engineering, the Yung Shue Wan Sewage Treatment Works. This isn’t your typical tourist stop, but trust me, its story is worth uncovering. The tale of the Yung Shue Wan Sewage Treatment Works began with a pressing need. Six villages in Yung Shue Wan, namely Po Wah Yuen, Sha Po New Village, Tai Yuen New Village, Kam Shan Terrace, Sha Po Old Village, and Ko Long, lacked proper sanitation. This posed a threat to both the health of the residents and the pristine waters of Southern Water. In 2008, a project was launched to address this issue, a project known as Outlying Islands Sewerage Stage 1 Phase 1 Part 2. The heart of this project was the construction of the Yung Shue Wan Sewage Treatment Works itself. This facility, completed in December 2015 at a cost of $354.5 million, was designed to treat a staggering 2,850 cubic meters of sewage per day. The project also included the installation of approximately 3.3 kilometers of sewers connecting these six villages to the new treatment plant. The Yung Shue Wan Sewage Treatment Works employs a secondary sewage treatment process, ensuring that wastewater is thoroughly cleaned before being discharged through a submarine outfall. This meticulous process significantly improves the water quality of Southern Water, protecting the marine ecosystem and the health of the surrounding communities. The construction was undertaken by Kaden Construction Limited and Build King Civil Engineering Limited, overseen by the Drainage Services Department and designed by AECOM CDM Joint Venture. The Yung Shue Wan Sewage Treatment Works may not be glamorous, but it represents a crucial step towards a sustainable future for these islands. It silently works beneath the surface, protecting the health and well-being of the community and preserving the natural beauty of the surrounding waters. This often-overlooked facility is a testament to the importance of investing in essential infrastructure, even if it’s not always visible.
