Did you notice the tranquility that washes over you as you approach Tai Pai Wan? This bay, located on the north shore of Lantau Island, holds stories of rural simplicity and ecological significance. Tai Pai Wan, also known as Tai Ho Wan, translates to “Big Oyster Bay” and whispers tales of a time when life here moved at a slower pace.

Tai Pai Wan was once a collection of quiet villages. Tai Ho Village, Pak Mong, Ngau Kwu Long and Tin Liu formed a community rooted in the land. Imagine small houses dotting the landscape and families connected by generations of shared history. At the time of the 2011 Census, the population of the area was about 150 persons.

In 1989, ambitious plans emerged to transform Tai Pai Wan. The British Hong Kong Government envisioned a new town, complete with the North Lantau Highway and a Tai Ho station. However, the rapid development of Hong Kong sometimes clashes with the preservation of its natural environment. Concerns arose about the impact on Tai Pai Wan’s delicate ecosystem. As a result, large-scale construction remains under review, caught between progress and preservation.

Tai Pai Wan has a hidden treasure. The Tai Ho Stream flows into the bay, nurturing an impressive array of freshwater and brackish water fish. Scientists have identified 68 species making it a haven for biodiversity. The Ayu, a unique fish species, thrives here. It is found only in Hokkaido and Hong Kong. In 1999, the government recognized this ecological importance. They designated Tai Ho Stream as a Site of Special Scientific Interest, protecting its diverse aquatic life.

Horseshoe crabs find refuge in the seagrass beds of Tai Ho Wan. Rare butterflies flutter through the air. The tokay gecko basks in the sun and Romer’s tree frog finds sanctuary here. Tai Pai Wan reveals a hidden world of incredible creatures if you look closely.

Although development plans have stalled, change has touched Tai Pai Wan. The North Lantau Highway cuts across the landscape. The Airport Express zooms past. Land reclamation has altered the shoreline. Private developers began acquiring land “many years ago”.

Villagers have voiced concerns. They worry about the impact of environmental protection plans on their traditional way of life. They fear restrictions on farming and building small houses. Protests have erupted. Roads were blocked and mangroves were destroyed in 2014. The delicate balance between development and preservation remains a challenge for Tai Pai Wan.

As you stand here at Tai Pai Wan, consider its past, present and future. It is a place where rural traditions meet modern development. Tai Pai Wan is a reminder of the importance of preserving our natural heritage amidst the relentless march of progress.
