Ap Lei Chau itself is an interesting place. It was once a small fishing village. Now, it is one of the most densely populated islands on Earth.
Yuk Kwai Shan stands 196 meters tall. The hill is named after Alexander Robert Johnston. He was a British colonial official. Johnston served as Acting Administrator of Hong Kong. He held the position twice from 1841 to 1842.
The hike up Yuk Kwai Shan can be steep. Some sections on the south side have ropes. These ropes help hikers reach the summit.
Locals have nicknamed a nearby, lower summit Fake Yuk Kwai Shan. This area has government leisure facilities.
There is no road access to the top of Yuk Kwai Shan. Hikers must walk. The trails can be challenging due to the incline.
The island of Ap Lei Chau has a rich history. Before British rule, it was a small fishing village. It was known as Fragrant Harbour Village. This village may have given Hong Kong its name.
Ap Lei Chau is connected to Hong Kong Island by bridges. The first bridge opened in 1983. It was widened in 1994.
There’s also an MTR South Island line. It links Ap Lei Chau to Hong Kong Island. The line opened in 2016. It provides easy access to the island.
