Shifting coloured boxes. That’s how I would describe the Yuen Long Town Hall Extension. The Yuen Long Town Hall has served this community for years. It stands as a testament to the district’s growth. Today let’s explore its story.
The Yuen Long Town Hall is more than a building. It is a community hub. It is a place where people connect, learn, and celebrate. In 2016, the town decided it needed to expand. The goal was to serve new groups better. These included immigrants, minorities, youths, and seniors.
ARK was hired to design this extension. For the first time, ARK used its skills in both architecture and interior design. Their goal was to create a unique space. This space would be for the public. The extension includes a multipurpose theatre called Xiqu. It also has classrooms and function rooms. And there is an organic roof farm.
The extension sits on the old open-air car park. This creates a courtyard inside the existing building. The design makes a continuous loop on each floor. Natural light was a key consideration. The architects stepped back the building section. This created a stepped, open atrium. This design allows natural light to reach the courtyard and rooms facing it. The stepped section also made semi-outdoor spaces. People can enjoy the outdoors while still being at the Yuen Long Town Hall.
Natural ventilation was also enhanced. A two-story opening in the facade helps airflow. This creates a stack effect in the atrium. This benefits both the old and new buildings.
The facade is a composition of shifting coloured boxes. These boxes reflect the rooms inside. The design reflects the diversity of the community. The facade creates a dynamic play of colors and movement. It represents the individuality of the groups using the building.
Yuen Long itself has a rich history. The earliest settlements date back to the Sung Dynasty. The Tang and Man clans were early settlers. By 2021, the district had over 660000 residents.
Getting to Yuen Long is now easier than ever. Route 3 and the Tai Lam Tunnel opened in 1998. Now, it only takes 20 minutes to reach Kowloon West. The MTR Tuen Ma Line also improved transport.
The Yuen Long Town Hall also supports ethnic minorities. The Support Service Centre For Ethnic Minorities began in 2009. It offers language courses and computer classes. The center also provides support groups and cultural activities. It aims to help ethnic minorities integrate into society.
So, as we stand here, remember the Yuen Long Town Hall is more than just bricks and mortar. It is a vibrant hub. It is a symbol of community. It is a place where everyone can belong.
