Wow. Look at the Yuen Long Sewage Treatment Works. It’s not what you expect is it? Most people picture grimy pipes and unpleasant smells. But this isn’t your grandfather’s sewage plant.

The Yuen Long Sewage Treatment Works opened in 1984. Back then it handled 70000 cubic meters of wastewater daily. It served Yuen Long Town the Yuen Long Industrial Estate and Kam Tin. Over the years the area grew. More people meant more waste. The old plant couldn’t keep up. So it’s being upgraded. It’s becoming the Yuen Long Effluent Polishing Plant or YLEPP for short. That’s a mouthful isn’t it?

YLEPP is a massive undertaking. They are increasing the capacity to 150000 cubic meters per day. They are doing this without using any extra land. Can you imagine how challenging that is? They are using cutting-edge technology. They are using things like lamella settlers Aerobic Granular Sludge systems and disc filter filtration. All this fits into the existing 8 hectare site.

And here’s a really cool fact. YLEPP isn’t just about cleaning up waste. It’s about sustainability. They’re aiming for carbon neutrality. How are they doing that? They’re using the biogas from the treatment process to fuel a combined heat and power system. That creates electricity to run the plant. Clever right? They also have over 5000 solar panels on the roof. This makes it one of the largest solar power generation facilities in Hong Kong. They are even reusing treated wastewater for cooling.

But it doesn’t stop there. They’re incorporating the plant into the community. There’s a riverside promenade. There are view decks and even an education corridor. This shows people how the plant works. This is how they promote sustainability. The whole project has a BEAM Plus Neighbourhood Platinum rating. That’s a pretty impressive sustainability certification.

YLEPP’s location presents unique challenges. The area has marble containing cavities. The plant is also near important wetlands like the Mai Po Inner Deep Bay Ramsar Site. Construction had to be carefully planned to avoid disturbing the local ecosystem. This includes the Chinese Pond Herons. They have noise barriers bird curtains and strict lighting controls. They even paused percussive piling work from November to March to protect the birds. The whole construction process was a carefully choreographed dance between progress and preservation.

So next time you think about sewage treatment think about YLEPP. It’s not just a plant. It’s a testament to innovation sustainability and community integration. It proves that even sewage treatment can be environmentally friendly. It’s a remarkable achievement. Isn’t it?
