Across the street from the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, you’ll find the You’ve Changed mural. It’s more than just paint on a wall. It’s a reflection of Toronto’s ever-shifting landscape and our evolving understanding of mental health. The You’ve Changed mural was created by artist Jesse Harris in 2012. It’s a vibrant piece nestled in Paul Garfinkel Parkette near Queen and Ossington. This area has seen its share of transformations. Once known as the Gallery District, it was a haven for artists, but also run-down and overlooked. Gentrification swept in, pushing many artists out with skyrocketing rents. The mural’s simple phrase, “You’ve Changed,” takes on multiple meanings here. It’s an acknowledgement of the neighborhood’s dramatic shift. It’s also a message of hope for those struggling with mental health, a nod to the nearby CAMH. While intended as a positive message, it also carries a hint of melancholy, a reminder of what’s been lost in the name of progress. The You’ve Changed mural serves as a powerful symbol of Toronto’s constant state of flux, a city where the only constant is change.
