Have you ever stumbled upon a place that feels both ancient and surprisingly new? Here at the Yin Hing Monastery, nestled within the lush greenery of Lantau Island’s Keng Shan area, you’ll find just that. The Yin Hing Monastery is a relatively recent addition to Lantau’s spiritual landscape. It was completed in 1966, a vibrant splash of color against the backdrop of the mountains. Its design is a striking representation of the five Buddhist elements: metal, wood, water, fire, and earth. Two imposing green guardian lions stand watch, protecting this serene space some three hundred meters above the ravine below. While the monastery’s vibrant exterior beckons, the interior is now restricted. The Yin Hing Monastery was sold to a private developer and converted into a columbarium. This transformation reflects a larger struggle, a reminder of the pressures of urbanization on Lantau’s heritage sites. Even though we can no longer explore its inner sanctum, the monastery’s exterior remains a captivating sight. The brightly colored framework against the deep green of the mountain forest is a testament to its unique elegance. The view from here offers a stunning panorama of the northwest of Lantau Island.
