Noah’s son, Japhet, is said to have founded Jaffa. This street, Yefet Street, is named after him. It’s one of the main streets of Jaffa and has a long history. Yefet Street stretches all the way from Clock Square to Bat Yam. There it becomes Balfour Street. The street acts as a dividing line. On one side are the old Jaffa areas of Ajami and Giv’at Aliyah. On the other side are newer neighborhoods such as Tzahalon and Neve Golan. Yefet Street wasn’t always a bustling center. It used to be a path running alongside the old city walls of Jaffa. When the walls were torn down, Yefet Street became a major commercial route. It even had an earlier name – Ajami Street. This was a tribute to Ibrahim al-Ajami, a companion of the Prophet. Yefet Street was part of a road linking Jaffa with Gaza. If you look closely, you can still see remnants of its past. The bridge over Yehuda Hyamit Street dates back to the British Mandate period.
