From a whisper to a roar, the story of Yau Ma Tei Police Station unfolds. It’s a tale etched in stone and brick, echoing with the footsteps of those who walked its halls. Yau Ma Tei Police Station stands before you, a silent sentinel guarding a treasure trove of memories. Originally built in 1922 at the junction of Canton Road and Public Square Street, it replaced an older station. This new station, a striking example of Edwardian Free Style architecture with Neoclassical influences, quickly became a landmark. Its grand porticoes, facing both Canton Road and Public Square Street, exuded authority and stability. The main entrance, nestled in an indented corner, was a subtle nod to feng shui principles, reflecting the local beliefs interwoven with the building’s design. Yau Ma Tei Police Station wasn’t just a building; it was a stage where history played out. In 1966, during a period of intense civil unrest, the station was targeted by a mob. The police, however, swiftly quelled the attack, demonstrating their resilience and commitment to order. Yau Ma Tei Police Station also played a role in the silver screen. It was featured in the 2001 action-comedy “Rush Hour 2”. Although the scene involving an explosion required the use of a studio set, the station’s unique architecture added a touch of authenticity to the film. The station also appeared in the 2007 TVB drama “On the First Beat”, showcasing its canteen, locker rooms, and other areas. Over the years, additions were made to the original structure. A new wing, built in 1957, served as barracks and accommodation. In 2009, recognizing its historical significance, the building was designated as a Grade II historic building. A side gate, once a common exit, has remained locked since the late 1970s. This closure stems from a series of unfortunate incidents involving officers who used the gate, giving rise to superstitious beliefs about its bad feng shui. A small shrine, tucked away in the compound, stands as a testament to these beliefs, intended to counteract the perceived negative energy emanating from the nearby Gascoigne Road Flyover. In 2016, the Yau Ma Tei Police Station relocated to a new building on Yau Cheung Road. The original station, now a poignant reminder of a bygone era, awaits its next chapter, its story continuing to unfold in the heart of Yau Ma Tei.
