Vermilion. That’s the color that first strikes you as we approach Yasaka Shrine. Known to locals as Gion-san, Yasaka Shrine stands as one of Kyoto’s most revered religious spots. Its history stretches back over 1350 years.

Imagine this. It is the height of summer. The air is thick with anticipation for the Gion Matsuri. This festival is one of Japan’s most famous celebrations. For almost the entire month of July, Kyoto becomes a city dedicated to festivities. The Yasaka Shrine is at the heart of it all.

The Yasaka Shrine’s story goes back to 656. According to shrine records, Irishi, a Korean envoy, brought the spirit of Susanoo-no-mikoto to this location. Another account states that in 876, a Buddhist priest named Ennyo enshrined Susanoo-no-mikoto here. Susanoo-no-Mikoto is now the chief deity. His consort Kushinadahime-no-Mikoto is enshrined to the east. Eight offspring deities are to the west.

Look around at the architecture. The main hall combines the inner sanctuary and offering hall into one structure. This unique design is called Gion-zukuri. In front of the hall, you’ll see a dance stage. Hundreds of lanterns adorn it. Local businesses donate to have their names inscribed on these lanterns. At night, when the lanterns glow, the Yasaka Shrine transforms into a magical landscape.

Notice the towering red gate to the west. This is perhaps the Yasaka Shrine’s most iconic feature. Pass through the vermilion gate to enter the main grounds. Here, you will find an impressive offering hall. Yasaka Shrine is open 24 hours a day. It provides a special experience for those seeking peace in ancient Kyoto.

Yasaka Shrine is famed for the Gion Matsuri. The festival originated in 869. A widespread epidemic struck Japan. To pray for protection, people erected 66 floats to enshrine the deities of Gion. The highlight is the procession on July 17th and 24th. During these parades, floats travel through Kyoto’s central streets. The floats and portable shrines purify the streets.

But the Gion Matsuri isn’t the only event here. The Okera Festival occurs on New Year’s Day. Setsubun celebrations take place in early February. Other festivals include the Ebisu Festival in January and Shichi-go-san in November.

Take a stroll through the grounds after dark. The main buildings are illuminated. The softly glowing lanterns create an unforgettable scene. It is easy to see why people lovingly call Yasaka Shrine Gion-san. The Yasaka Shrine has played a key role in Kyoto’s history. As a spiritual center, it attracts millions of visitors each year. Its importance as a religious site makes it integral to Kyoto’s culture. Yasaka Shrine offers a connection to the peace of ancient Kyoto.
