Yarramundi is nestled where the Nepean River transforms into the Hawkesbury, joined by the flowing waters of the Grose. This place, steeped in Aboriginal heritage, takes its name from a renowned healer of the Boorooberongal clan, Yarramundi. Known to the Europeans as “the chief of the Richmond Tribe,” he was a respected figure who played a significant role in the early interactions between Indigenous Australians and the British settlers. In April 1791, Governor Arthur Phillip and his party of explorers met Yarramundi during their expedition to map the river system. This meeting marked a pivotal moment in the region’s history, a clash of cultures against the backdrop of the magnificent confluence of rivers. The area we now know as Yarramundi was originally known as Kearns Retreat. But the legacy of the Indigenous healer resonated, eventually giving the suburb its current name. Beyond its rich Aboriginal heritage, Yarramundi has a fascinating industrial past. In 1925, a sand mine was established on the island at Yarramundi Falls. An aerial ropeway was built, connecting the island to railway sidings near Phillip. This innovative system transported the mined sand until a devastating flood destroyed the ropeway in 1927. Not to be deterred, a railway line was then constructed to the island mine, showcasing the resilience of the early industrialists. This railway, complete with its own locomotives, served the mine until 1946 when road transport took over. Today, remnants of this industrial history might be hidden beneath the tranquil landscape, waiting to be rediscovered. Yarramundi offers more than just historical echoes.
