“Two men, straining every muscle…” a villager might have whispered, watching young Tang clansmen hoist heavy stone blocks within the Yan Tun Kong Study Hall. These stones weren’t mere rocks. They were stepping stones to a future in the military Imperial Civil Service. Yan Tun Kong Study Hall, also known as Yin Yik Tong, stands as a testament to the Tang clan’s dedication to both scholarly and martial pursuits. Located in Hang Tau Tsuen, Ping Shan, its name honors three revered ancestors: Tang Wai-tak (Yan-shaw), Tang Ji-fong (Tun-fuk), and Tang Fung (Ming-kong). While the exact construction date remains a mystery, a plaque commemorating renovations in 1870 suggests it existed well before the Tongzhi reign. Yan Tun Kong Study Hall wasn’t just a place for ancestral worship. It was a vibrant center of learning, housing the Bok Bok Chai study hall where young clansmen prepared for the rigorous Imperial Civil Service Examinations. Imagine the halls buzzing with activity, the air thick with the scent of ink and the murmur of recitations. The side chambers offered respite for weary scholars, a place to rest and recharge before returning to their studies. Yan Tun Kong Study Hall is a beautiful example of Lingnan architecture, a two-hall-three-bay layout surrounding a tranquil courtyard. Look closely and you’ll see intricate plaster moldings adorning the ridge and facade, depicting auspicious motifs. The hall also safeguards precious relics: a carved altar, camel-hump shaped inter-beam blocks, eaves boards, couplets, and, of course, those weighty training stones. Though the Imperial Civil Service Examinations were abolished in 1905, Yan Tun Kong Study Hall continued to serve the community, offering modern education until Tat Tak Public School opened in 1931. Even today, the spirit of learning and the legacy of the Tang clan continue to resonate within these historic walls. Yan Tun Kong Study Hall stands not just as a monument to the past, but as a symbol of the enduring power of education and tradition.
