What if I told you that this quiet shrine was once at the heart of a desperate battle against disease? Welcome to Yakumo Jinja. This humble place holds a fascinating history. It links back to a time when epidemics swept through Kamakura.

Yakumo Jinja’s story begins around 1082. Minamoto Yoshimitsu, a samurai, founded it. He sought to protect the people of Kamakura from widespread illness. The shrine was initially a branch of Kyoto’s Gion Shrine. Gion Shrine was famous for its power to ward off sickness.

By 1084, the epidemics in Kamakura had lessened. Yakumo Jinja became a symbol of hope. People flocked here to pray for good health and protection against bad luck. Over time, it became one of the oldest talismanic shrines in Kamakura.

The name Yakumo Jinja has its own story. In 1868, Gion shrines were renamed. This Kamakura shrine adopted the name Yakumo Jinja. However, locals still affectionately call it Gion-san. This shows the deep connection to its origins.

Another Yakumo Jinja is located in Tokyo. It used to be known as Tennō-Gū. The enshrined kami was Gozu-tennō. During the Meiji Restoration, it was renamed Yakumo Jinja. Its kami became Susano-o. The founding date is unclear. However, evidence suggests a shrine existed here about 700 years ago.

This Yakumo Jinja stands on the old Kamakura Highway. A small stone memorial tower is embedded in a tree. It dates back to 1319. The Inari Jinja is thought to be as old as Tennō-Gū. The current main hall was built in 1860. It was remodeled in 2007. There is also an unexcavated burial mound. It is called the Tennōtsuka kofun and dates back to the sixth century.

Another Yakumo Hikawa Shrine is said to have been founded on September 19, 707. The workforce of Fusuma Village built a small shrine. Susano-o-Mikoto was considered the guardian deity of Fusuma Village. He wrote the oldest waka in Japanese. From this, the name Yakumo derives.

The Yakumo Hikawa Shrine celebrates Susano-o’s exploits. He sliced off the eight heads and tails of the Eight-Forked Serpent. He discovered the Ame-no-murakumo-no-Tsurugi in the fourth tail. Kushinada-hime is the wife of Susano-o. He took on the Eight-Forked Serpent to win her hand in marriage.

Yakumo Jinja may be small. However, its history is rich. It is a testament to the power of faith and community. As you explore this peaceful place remember its role. It offered solace during times of crisis and continues to offer peace today. Take a moment to appreciate the enduring spirit of Yakumo Jinja.
