Who could have imagined such a simple name for a sculpture, “XVI”? Here at the Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi, this XVI Sculpture takes center stage. The Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi itself is a story woven through time, starting in 1610 with a humble adobe church. But like any good story, there’s conflict. The Pueblo Revolt of 1680 destroyed that early church. Rebuilt, replaced, and renovated over centuries, the Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi stands as a testament to resilience. XVI is a more recent addition but no less significant in its artistic contribution. The Cathedral wasn’t completed until 1887, its spires unfinished due to lack of funds. Later, in 1987, a monumental altar screen depicting North and South American saints was installed. The XVI Sculpture adds another layer to this rich history, a modern counterpoint to the centuries-old narrative embedded in the very stones of the Cathedral.
