Whispers of generations past echo around the Woutersen-Wessels Vault. This unassuming structure holds centuries of Cape Town history. The Woutersen-Wessels Vault stands as a silent testament to the lives and legacies of two prominent families. Built in the 1820s by Pieter Woutersen, a merchant, it reflects a time when Dutch families buried their dead on their estates. Woutersen’s wife, Maria de Villiers, later married J.J.L. Smuts, Cape Town’s second mayor. This connection adds another layer of historical significance to the Woutersen-Wessels Vault. The vault’s location in Braemar Estate is also significant. This quiet residential suburb was established by the Wessels family in the 1930s on their farmstead. Among those interred within the vault is Adv. M.L. Wessels, brother of Sir John Wessels, a former Chief Justice of South Africa. The vault itself is a simple yet elegant structure. Built from local stone, its flat roof and unadorned façade speak to the practical and enduring design of early Cape Dutch architecture. Interestingly, the Woutersen-Wessels Vault also served as a nautical landmark. It aligns perfectly with the entrance to the old Victoria Basin at the V&A Waterfront. Old charts even mark it as a guide for ships entering the docks. Over time, grave robbers targeted the vault, stealing ornaments and valuables. This led to the vault’s permanent sealing. Subsequent family members were buried outside the structure. The Woutersen-Wessels Vault has been restored. This effort ensures its preservation for future generations. Today, the Woutersen-Wessels Vault stands as a protected heritage site. It offers a glimpse into Cape Town’s early history, a tangible connection to the city’s rich past.
