Why does this church look like a giant game of Tetris? We are standing before the Wotrubakirche. Its unconventional design often takes people by surprise. You see, the Wotrubakirche isn’t your typical church. Built between 1974 and 1976, it embodies the Brutalist architectural style.
The church was designed by the famous Austrian sculptor Fritz Wotruba. Wotruba, known for his powerful yet abstract sculptures, envisioned a space that challenged traditional notions of sacred architecture. He achieved this with 152 massive, irregularly arranged concrete blocks. These blocks, varying in size and shape, seem almost haphazardly placed. Yet, they interlock with a precision that is both intriguing and aesthetically striking.
The interior continues this theme of abstract geometry. Light filters through strategically placed windows, creating a play of light and shadow on the rough concrete surfaces. Wotruba died before seeing his vision fully realized. It was left to architect Fritz Gerhard Mayr to complete the church based on his designs.
