Ever wondered where the name Woolooware comes from? It’s derived from the Aboriginal word Wooloowa. This means muddy track. The name reflects the area’s original landscape. It featured low lying mud flats and salt marshes. Tea tree and black wattle scrub once dominated.

Welcome to Woolooware. This southern Sydney suburb offers a unique blend of history and modern living. It’s located 24 kilometers south of Sydney’s central business district. Woolooware shares the 2230 postcode with Cronulla.

Let’s step back in time. Originally, Woolooware was Dharawal and Tharawal land. Later, the area was granted to John Connell. He cut a channel from Woolooware Road to the bay’s deep water. This allowed timber to be transported to Sydney markets by boat. Oyster cultivation also thrived here.

In the 1860s, Thomas Holt acquired the land. He established his Sutherland Estate. Holt leased much of his estate to the Holt Sutherland Estate Land Company. They created residential estates. By the 1920s, families like the Greens and Newports operated dairies here. Green’s dairy is now part of the Woolooware Golf Club.

The railway extension from Sutherland to Cronulla in 1939 changed Woolooware. After World War Two, residential settlement increased. The first public school opened in 1951. The post office followed in 1954.

Did you know that Woolooware was the site of Australia’s first project homes? The Australian division of Taylor Woodrow built the first subdivision. These classic red brick homes in Taywood Street marked a new era.

Today, Woolooware is known for its family friendly atmosphere. It boasts a strong sense of community. The suburb is tightly held. Residents stay in their homes for an average of almost 19 years. This is the most tightly held suburb in Sydney.

Woolooware is changing. The Woolooware Bay Town Centre complex is a dining and entertainment precinct. The Pointsbet Stadium, formerly known as Endeavour Field, is home to the Cronulla Sharks. This rugby league field is undergoing refurbishment.

Woolooware offers a variety of housing options. You will find freestanding homes and modern apartments. The suburb has a small shopping strip on Wills Road. Here you can find cafes, shops and services.

For recreation, Woolooware has numerous sports facilities. These include Woolooware Oval and Captain Cook Playing Fields. The Woolooware Golf Club offers a well looked after public course.

Woolooware offers a mix of convenience and tranquility. It is close to beaches and the city. With its rich history and strong community, Woolooware provides a unique living experience in Sydney’s south. As we conclude our visit, remember Woolooware. It is more than just a suburb.
