Here stands Woodbridge High School a place of learning. It opened its doors in 1964. Originally, classes were held at Woodbridge Middle School. The current building opened in 1974. The first class to attend all four years here graduated in 1978.
Woodbridge High School has a rich history. Cecil D. Hylton’s development of Woodbridge led to its creation. The school started in the Marumsco Hills Subdivision. It quickly grew needing a larger space.
Overcrowding has been a concern. The school has experienced periods of being over capacity. Teachers sometimes had to use other classrooms during free periods. A new high school is planned to alleviate this. The project has been delayed to 2029.
Heather Abney has been the principal since 2016. She leads the Woodbridge High School with dedication. Before her, seven other principals guided the school. Each left their mark on the community.
Woodbridge High School is fully accredited. It offers various programs for its students. The AP Scholars Program started in 2017. Students complete research projects and community service. They also take at least five AP courses.
The school has CTE programs. These include Army JROTC and Cosmetology. There is also Project Lead the Way. Woodbridge is one of four county high schools with PLTW. Engineering courses are available. These cover design, principles, electronics, and civil engineering.
Fine and performing arts were once centered here. The Center for Fine and Performing Arts moved to Colgan High School in 2016. Woodbridge still has a strong performing arts program. It recently won the VMEA Blue Ribbon Award.

The Woodbridge High School Vikings compete in the 6A Cardinal District. They offer many sports including: cheer, cross country, field hockey and football. Also, golf, basketball, gymnastics, track, swimming, baseball, lacrosse, soccer, softball, and tennis.
The girls’ basketball team won a state championship in 2019. The boys’ cross country team won in 2023. Woodbridge High School has a history of athletic success.
Several notable alumni have attended Woodbridge High School. They include politicians, athletes, and artists. Hala Ayala and Joey Cook are among them. Russell Davis and Da’Shawn Hand also attended here. They have made their marks in their respective fields.
Woodbridge High School has a long history. It honors its alumni and history with a special wall. This wall represents students, staff, and programs. An alumni event is held annually. New images are added to the wall each year.
Dr. Thomas Gaul, a former principal, is remembered. His motto was “The Best School East of the Mississippi”. He set high standards for everyone. He was involved in many school events.
Woodbridge High School’s theatre program is active. It has been for over 55 years. More than 7,000 students have participated. They perform various shows. They also learn about theatre history and technical aspects.
