Did you know Wong Kok Mei’s story is intertwined with that of Ji Gong? This cape may seem a world away from temples. But Hong Kong’s history often connects disparate places in unexpected ways.

Let’s uncover the hidden link between Wong Kok Mei and the wandering monk.

In the 1940s, a religious movement called De Jiao, originating from Chaoshantang, established a base in Hong Kong. This branch, located in Sheung Wan, revered Ji Gong. Merchants from Chaoshantang joined, creating a community of Ji Gong followers. They spoke the Chaoshantang dialect during ceremonies.

The Tai Ping Shan Street Ji Gong Temple in Sheung Wan holds historical artifacts from the last century. These artifacts tell the story of the Ji Gong faith. The International Ji Gong Culture Association connects different aspects of Ji Gong culture. They hold exhibitions and guided tours. These events explore Ji Gong’s presence in Hong Kong.

One such tour, “A Journey into the Early History of Chinese in Sheung Wan,” starts near Nanbei Lane. It ends at the Ji Gong Temple on Tai Ping Shan Street. The tour passes Tung Wah Hospital. The Ji Gong Temple holds cultural relics like the Hu Men and a plaque from the Guangxu era.

Ji Gong is often seen as mad and eccentric. He wears ragged clothes and drinks wine. Yet, high-ranking officials respected him as a saint. Common people saw him as a living Buddha. Ji Gong’s spirit of saving the world endures. This spirit guides people towards kindness.

Ji Mei Yan, Chairman of the International Ji Gong Culture Association, emphasizes this. She believes Ji Gong’s core value is worth preserving. Events like the “Xuan Hu Ji Shi” Workshop offer stress-relieving experiences. There are also paper-cutting and bamboo weaving workshops.

The Kwong Fook I Chi temple became the Ji Gong Temple. It once provided funeral services for Chinese laborers. These laborers had no family. Locals called it “Baixing Miao” or People’s Temple. In 1980, the statue of Ji Gong moved here from a temple in Wan Chai.

While Wong Kok Mei might seem distant from these events, remember this. Hong Kong’s cultural threads connect even the most unlikely places. The spirit of Ji Gong, a beacon of kindness, resonates throughout the city. It touches even this natural cape.

So, as you stand at Wong Kok Mei, think about Ji Gong’s legacy. Consider how beliefs and traditions shaped Hong Kong’s identity.
