Sculpted in bronze, a servicewoman stands tall at the Women’s Memorial Fountain. She represents the unwavering spirit of the women of New South Wales. These women served bravely in World War II. The Women’s Memorial Fountain is more than just a fountain. It’s a poignant tribute. It stands in Jessie Street Park at Circular Quay. The park itself was intended to honor the “great women of Australia”. This makes it a fitting location for this memorial. The Women’s Memorial Fountain features a bronze statue. The statue stands on a sandstone plinth, against a sandstone wall. Beside her, a bronze bas-relief depicts the various roles women filled during the war. The wall behind the statue carries plaques and bas-reliefs. These honor the women who served in various branches. These include the Australian Army Medical Corps, Australian Army Nursing Service, and Australian Women’s Army Service. They also commemorate the Voluntary Aid Detachments and Australian Army Medical Women’s Service. And they recognize those who served in the Royal Australian Air Force Medical Service, Royal Australian Air Force Nursing Service, and Women’s Auxiliary Australian Air Force. Finally, they acknowledge the contributions of women in the Royal Australian Naval Nursing Service and Women’s Royal Australian Naval Service. The Women’s Memorial Fountain is the work of Dennis Adams. Born in Sydney in 1914, Adams studied at the Royal Art Society in Sydney and the Royal Academy Schools in London. His life took a turn when he joined the 18th Battalion. He was later seconded to the Department of Home Security for camouflage work on RAAF stations. In 1942, he was appointed a war artist. His service continued in New Guinea, the Middle East, Italy, Egypt, the UK, France, Belgium, Newfoundland, Canada, the Bahamas, the US, and Japan. His experience during the war deeply influenced his artistic career. After 1945, he focused on war-related art. He created numerous works, including the Royal Australian Regiment Memorial in Regimental Square. He also contributed paintings and sculptures to the Australian War Memorial in Canberra. His contributions were recognized in 1989 when he was awarded the Order of Australia Medal. The Women’s Memorial Fountain stands as a testament to the courage and dedication of these women. It serves as a reminder of their invaluable contribution to Australia during World War II.
