Step onto the grounds of Wolftrap Elementary School. This isn’t just any school. It’s a place steeped in history. A place where stories unfold.

Wolftrap Elementary School opened its doors in 1968. It was a significant year. Not only did the school open but that year also marked the introduction of kindergarten county-wide in Fairfax County Public Schools. Think about that. The very year this school opened. Kindergarten became a county-wide reality.

Imagine the excitement. The anticipation of a brand-new school. This wasn’t just bricks and mortar. It was a vision. The architects Chapman and Miller designed the building. Hill and Kimmel constructed it for $764500. A remarkable feat for its time. The school boasted 23 classrooms and a rare luxury for public schools then air conditioning. That’s right. Air conditioning! A truly innovative design. So innovative that in 1970 the American Association of School Administrators exhibited its architectural design.

But the story doesn’t end there. Initially named Waverly Elementary School. The name was swiftly changed. The community rallied. They preferred Wolftrap Elementary. The name Wolftrap resonates deeply. It’s a local landmark. A name associated with a creek a plantation and today a national park and a world-renowned performance venue.

The lack of a gymnasium initially hampered the school. The Fairfax County School Board lacked sufficient funding. An addition finally came in 1986 adding classrooms and a combined gymnasium and music room. More classrooms followed in 1989.

Then came the major renovation. From 2004 to 2006. This wasn’t just a face-lift. Every classroom was completely refurbished. The library doubled in size. New heating air conditioning and sprinkler systems were installed. New additions included six classrooms a multipurpose room a band room and more office space. The students returned in 2006 to a school that was essentially brand new. Four mobile computer labs and the first SMART Boards were introduced. The Gifted and Talented program expanded. Chinese language classes expanded. And Wolftrap’s first English for Speakers of Other Languages ESOL teacher joined the staff.

The Candace Leyton Innovation Learning Lab stands as a testament to the school’s commitment to innovative learning. This incredible addition was made possible by a generous donation from a former student Chris Shumway. He wanted to honor his third-grade teacher Candace Leyton. A teacher who inspired him profoundly. The lab’s non-traditional environment enables students to develop creative thinking skills.

Wolftrap Elementary School. It’s not simply a building. It’s a living legacy. A testament to community spirit innovation and the lasting impact of dedicated educators. A place where the past present and future intersect. And a place that continues to shape young lives.
