Beneath our feet lies more than just grass. This is Withrow Park a vibrant hub in Toronto’s Riverdale neighborhood. This 8.5-hectare park has a story etched into its very landscape.

Withrow Park emerged in the 1910s. It rose alongside the surrounding community. Imagine a time of burgeoning growth. The park offered green space for a rapidly developing city.

Its name honors John Jacob Withrow. He was a prominent local landowner and builder. More than that, he served as a city alderman. Withrow was also a founder of the Canadian National Exhibition. Think of the CNE’s vast scale. Then picture Withrow’s early vision.

The park’s boundaries are distinct. Carlaw Avenue marks its eastern edge. Bain Avenue defines the south. Logan Avenue forms the western border. McConnell Avenue completes the northern perimeter.

Withrow Park is more than just open space. It’s a multi-purpose park designed for diverse activities. Children’s laughter fills the air. Athletes compete on its fields. Families gather for picnics.

In 2004, Withrow Park faced a dark chapter. Hot dogs laced with poison were found. One dog died and fifteen others suffered. The city closed the park temporarily with chain-link fences. Controversy rippled through the community. The case remains unsolved.

But Withrow Park has seen brighter days too. In February 2008, the Toronto Maple Leafs held a practice here. This celebrated the refurbishment of the park’s ice rink. Imagine hockey stars gliding across the ice. The cold air was filled with cheers.

Withrow Park stands as a testament to community resilience. It is a place of recreation and remembrance. The park offers a space for everyone.
