Ever imagine a school named after a British Prime Minister? Here at Winston Churchill Collegiate Institute, that’s a reality. Winston Churchill Collegiate Institute stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of its namesake. The Toronto District School Board operates this public high school. It’s nestled in the Dorset Park neighborhood of Scarborough. Winston Churchill, the iconic British Prime Minister, lends his name to this institution. This isn’t just a coincidence or a random choice. The school was deliberately named after him, a tribute to his leadership during World War II. The school’s motto, “Fides, Virtus, Doctrina,” translates to “Faith, Excellence, Knowledge.” These words resonate through the halls of Winston Churchill Collegiate Institute, guiding the educational philosophy. The school opened its doors on September 7, 1954. It was originally built with 20 classrooms, a library, a cafeteria, and a gymnasium. Over the years, the school has expanded significantly. It now boasts over 75 classrooms, four gymnasiums, and a 904-seat auditorium. Interestingly, the auditorium has a hidden history. It was initially designed to house a swimming pool. However, plans changed, and it was converted into an auditorium. Despite the change, remnants of the plumbing system for the pool still exist, a subtle reminder of what could have been. Winston Churchill Collegiate Institute isn’t just about academics. It also houses the Leonard Braithwaite Program, an Africentric alternative program. This program, named after Ontario MPP Leonard Braithwaite, is the first of its kind at the TDSB secondary level. Winston Churchill Collegiate Institute is also a hub for extracurricular activities. Students can participate in a variety of sports like basketball, soccer, and hockey. Numerous clubs, such as the Student Activities Council and the Churchill Bull Dog Council, offer further opportunities for engagement. The school’s colours are black, white, grey, and purple. Its mascot is the Churchill Bulldog, a symbol of strength and determination. Alumni of Winston Churchill Collegiate Institute have made their mark in diverse fields. Dwayne De Rosario, an MLS MVP Award winner, honed his soccer skills here. Bob McCown, a prominent sports broadcaster, and Rick Middleton, a former NHL player, also walked these halls.
