Is this just a giant concrete cone? You might be surprised to learn that this unassuming structure is a Winkelturm. It’s a World War II-era air raid shelter. These structures, nicknamed “concrete cigars” and “sugar beet heads,” were designed to be difficult targets for bombs. The Winkelturm was designed by architect Leo Winkel. Winkel’s concept was that the tower’s smooth, sloped sides would cause bombs to slide off harmlessly. The design proved remarkably effective. Only one Winkelturm was ever destroyed by a direct hit. This Winkelturm stands as a testament to Winkel’s ingenuity and a reminder of a turbulent period in history.
