On a crisp morning in 1888, Edward Windybank stumbled upon a hidden gem. He was working on the railway construction when he first saw the glistening waters of Cowan Creek. He descended the steep slope and found himself captivated by Waratah Bay. It was here, amidst this breathtaking landscape, that the story of Windybanks boatshed ruins began. Windybanks boatshed, nestled in Waratah Bay, became a popular destination. Windybank, a skilled carpenter, built houseboats and cottages for visitors. He even carved a track from Berowra station down to the boatshed, making it accessible to both locals and tourists. The bay buzzed with life. Regular dances and musical evenings filled the air with laughter and music. Windybanks boatshed offered a unique blend of natural beauty and lively entertainment. Edward’s legacy continued even after his death in 1927. His sons took over the business. Later, in the late 1940s, Bernie and Val Beausang purchased the boatshed. They continued to operate the boat shed and shop well into the 1960s. Windybanks boatshed became synonymous with leisure and recreation on Cowan Creek. Even one of Windybank’s sons, Gordon, carried on a family tradition. Gordon, along with his wife Mavis, established the Windybank Bait Service from their home in Mount Colah in 1950, operating it until 2018. Today, only the ruins of Windybanks boatshed remain. They stand as a silent testament to a bygone era. They whisper tales of laughter, music, and the entrepreneurial spirit of Edward Windybank. These ruins offer a glimpse into the rich history of Cowan Creek and the indelible mark left by the Windybank family.
