Contemplate the whispering wind as it rustles through the trees. We are standing at Windsor Downs Nature Reserve. Established in 1990, this reserve protects a vital piece of Cumberland Plain Woodland. This woodland is an endangered ecological community. It is exclusive to the western suburbs of Sydney.

Windsor Downs Nature Reserve spans 364 hectares. That’s about 900 acres. The land was once used for grazing cattle by the Riverstone Meatworks. The meatworks operated here for over 100 years. You can still see remnants of that time. Look for the old water tower and concrete water troughs. They stand as silent witnesses to the past.

Before the meatworks, the Darug people called this land home. Aboriginal campsites existed within the reserve. Stone tools have been discovered here. They offer glimpses into the lives of the Darug. Windsor Downs Nature Reserve holds layers of history within its soil.

The reserve’s flora is diverse. It is determined by the varying soil types. Ironbarks dominate the clay-based soils. Look for Eucalyptus fibrosa and Eucalyptus sideroxylon. Sandy soils support woodlands of Eucalyptus sclerophylla. Sub-mature Hakeas grow on former grazing land.

Windsor Downs Nature Reserve provides refuge for rare plants. Dillwynia tenuifolia and Pultenaea parviflora thrive here. Keep an eye out for Persoonia nutans and Grevillea juniperina. It is also one of the few places in the world where you can spot the endangered nodding geebung shrub. The reserve is a haven for threatened flora.

The fauna is just as impressive. Eastern grey kangaroos hop through the open spaces. Swamp wallabies also call this place home. Sugar gliders and possums nest in the trees. Windsor Downs Nature Reserve teems with native wildlife.

Birdwatchers will delight in the variety of species. Yellow-tailed black cockatoos and sulphur-crested cockatoos fly overhead. Listen for the calls of laughing kookaburras. The endangered regent honeyeater also resides here. It might even house one of the few populations of red-capped robins left in Sydney. Windsor Downs Nature Reserve is a birdwatcher’s paradise.

Reptiles also find sanctuary here. Goannas bask in the sun. Eastern brown snakes and red-bellied black snakes slither through the undergrowth. You might spot a blue-tongued lizard. The reserve provides habitat for many reptiles.

A major fire impacted Windsor Downs Nature Reserve in 2013. Strong winds blew down a power line. This caused the fire. The reserve has since recovered. It demonstrates the resilience of nature.

Walk the trails of Windsor Downs Nature Reserve. Experience the rich birdlife. The flat Richmond Road and Surprise trails are wheelchair-accessible. Assistance may be required on some sections. Access for wheelchairs to the park is from Mr Corns Trail off Sanctuary Drive.

Take a moment to appreciate this protected area. Windsor Downs Nature Reserve safeguards endangered species. It preserves a piece of our natural heritage. Remember the stories of the land. Think of the Darug people. Consider the cattle that once grazed here. Respect the delicate balance of nature. As you leave, carry with you an appreciation for this unique place. Windsor Downs Nature Reserve is a treasure worth protecting.
