A whoosh of wind. That’s how I remember the Wind Tunnel Building. Not the building itself but the sheer force of its purpose.
The Wind Tunnel Building in Washington D.C. wasn’t just a structure. It was a crucial piece of naval aviation history. Built in 1913 it was the largest wind tunnel in the world at that time. Imagine the ambition. The need to push boundaries. Aviation was new. The Navy wanted to refine its fledgling air force.
The Experimental Model Basin already existed at the Washington Navy Yard. It tested aircraft on water. But what about the air itself? How could they improve their planes’ flight? The answer was a wind tunnel. Congress provided the funds. The tunnel’s chamber measured eight by eight feet. It was big enough to test good-sized models.
Rear Admiral David Taylor oversaw the project. William McEntee a man known for the first airplane take-off from a ship was put in charge. The team spent a year calibrating the equipment. They compared their results with those of wind tunnels in MIT and England.
The United States’ entry into World War I dramatically increased the demand for the Wind Tunnel Building. Dr. Albert Zahm a professor at Catholic University took over the laboratory. He put the tests on a more scientific basis. He made sure every test was meticulously documented. Between 1917 and 1919 135 tests were conducted. These tests included complete airplane models airships parts of airplanes and even a full-sized airplane radiator. Some of this testing directly contributed to the Navy Curtiss airplane famous for its transatlantic flight in 1919.
After the war new facilities were built in Carderock Maryland. The Wind Tunnel Building in Washington D.C. was shut down. The building itself is gone now. But its legacy lives on. It once stood where the Cold War gallery of the Navy Museum is today. A silent testament to the power of innovation and the crucial role it played in shaping naval aviation history.
