“Arms dealer” might sound like a character from a spy novel. But it is part of the story of Winchester-on-the-Severn. This distinctive estate overlooks a bend in the Severn River. It sits just outside Annapolis.
Winchester-on-the-Severn’s history stretches back to 1660. William Hopkins originally patented the land. Over time, the Hammond family of Annapolis acquired the property. They held it until 1827. Between 1827 and 1920, the land was divided. Samuel Lucas owned The Friary property between 1858 and 1920. Legend says this point served as a stop on the Underground Railroad. Tunnels may have helped escaping slaves.
In 1922, an arms dealer built most of the mansion we see today. He preserved and restored the original core from the 18th century. Some say he concealed illegal weapons in a hidden basement passageway.
The Catholic Church purchased it in 1950. It became home to the St. Conrad Friary for 34 years. At its peak, more than 60 Capuchin monks lived here. By 2002, the Phillips family of Phillips Seafood bought the home. They paid $2.5 million.
The Phillips family started a long and expensive restoration. Wings and extensions were added. The exterior kept its Georgian Revival style. The interiors became more contemporary. The styles blend together. Tall arched windows and terrace walls stand out. Many floors feature wide teak boards in a herringbone pattern. There are eleven fireplaces. One has marble from Michelangelo’s Italian quarry.
The Capuchin’s chapel became a ballroom or all-purpose hall. Winchester-on-the-Severn measures 35435 square feet. It has seven bedrooms and eight full bathrooms. There are also five half baths. The main house has a two-story ceiling. Two large kitchens can cater to big events. The formal dining room has silk-covered walls. A two-level conservatory is filled with light. It shines down from a ceiling oculus.
The wine cellar is sized for tastings. There is a movie theater. It can hold many guests. Multiple dining areas exist inside and out. Oak panels line the library. Walnut doors are throughout. The music room is long and spacious. The billiard room has a bar. It serves as a man cave. The indoor spa has a workout station. It also has a long-resistance swimming pool.
Terraces surround the living areas. The outdoor pool terrace has wiring and a gas line for an outdoor kitchen. The guest wing has a common area. It features underwater windows for viewing swimmers. There is a tennis court. A funicular takes people to the water’s edge and the yacht dock. The three-bay garage can hold up to nine cars.
Winchester-on-the-Severn sits in the Sailing Capital of the World. It is close to airports and major cities. It is near the Naval Academy and the Annapolis Yacht Club. Today, Winchester-on-the-Severn stands as a testament to history. It is a blend of faith, wealth, and architectural vision.
