Hidden within the Blue Mountains, Wilson Park whispers tales of picnics, swimming, and a truly unique map. Yes, right here in Lawson, Wilson Park isn’t just a green space. It’s a living piece of history. Originally known as Snake Gully, this 50-acre park was officially christened Wilson Park in 1932. It was named after Percy Wilson, a dedicated councillor and publisher of a local tourist guide. Imagine the steam trains chugging along, drawing water from Fairy Falls Creek, the same creek that still meanders through the park today. This very water was vital for those early trains. Wilson Park isn’t just about natural beauty. It houses the Lawson Swimming Pool, opened in 1931, a welcome respite on a warm day. But the real gem of Wilson Park is the concrete relief map of Australia. This one-of-a-kind marvel was built in 1932 by a local man, Frank Higgison. He meticulously carved and molded the map out of a natural rock outcrop. He even painted it according to the colors used in school atlases at the time. This incredible feat of artistry and engineering is a testament to Higgison’s vision. Sadly, Higgison later perished on the Sandakan Death March. His map, however, continues to educate and inspire visitors at Wilson Park. It has been carefully restored, ensuring that future generations can appreciate this unique piece of Australian history. So, as you stroll through Wilson Park, remember the stories held within its boundaries. From the gurgling waters of Fairy Falls Creek to the vibrant hues of the map of Australia, Wilson Park offers a glimpse into the past, present, and future of this charming mountain town.
