Gazing upon Willoughby, can you sense the echoes of its past? Willoughby, a suburb nestled on Sydney’s lower North Shore, holds a captivating history. Established in the 1850s, Willoughby is just 8 kilometers north of Sydney’s bustling central business district. It’s governed by the City of Willoughby, though interestingly, the administrative center is located in neighboring Chatswood. The naming of Willoughby is shrouded in some mystery. Some believe it’s named after a parish. Others believe Surveyor-General Sir Thomas Mitchell named it in honor of Sir James Willoughby Gordon, whom he served under during the Peninsular War. Sir James held the position of quartermaster-general in England when the First Fleet embarked on its journey to Botany Bay. Willoughby’s story is one of growth and transformation. In 1871, its first post office opened its doors, followed by the construction of Pommy Lodge, a small sandstone building initially serving as the Congregational Church. Later, in 1884, Laurel Bank Cottage graced Penshurst Street. Today, it serves as a function and conference center under the ownership of the local Masonic Lodge. Willoughby even boasts a unique piece of road construction history. Around 1920, Telford Lane was paved using a method pioneered by Thomas Telford in 19th-century England. This lane stands as one of the few surviving examples of this technique in Sydney. The suburb also played a significant role in Australia’s media landscape. For 64 years, it housed the headquarters of the Nine Network. Adjacent to the headquarters stood the Channel 9 TV Tower, once Australia’s tallest structure at 233 meters. Although demolished in 2021, it paved the way for new homes. Willoughby has several heritage-listed sites, including Laurelbank and the Walter Burley Griffin Incinerator, a remarkable example of industrial architecture. Beyond its historical significance, Willoughby offers a vibrant commercial area with shops and restaurants along Mowbray Road, Willoughby Road, Penshurst Street, and High Street. For recreation, residents and visitors enjoy Bicentennial Reserve, including Hallstrom Park, as well as Flat Rock Gully, a bushland area with walking tracks. A significant Armenian community calls Willoughby home, having arrived in the 1960s and 1970s. Their presence has enriched the suburb’s cultural tapestry. So, as you stand in Willoughby, remember the layers of history beneath your feet, from Aboriginal heritage to European settlement, from industrial development to a thriving community.
