Early settlements formed the basis of Warsaw. Bródno Kamion and Jazdów were among the first. Bródno was burned around 1040. Kamion was established around 1065. Jazdów was raided in 1262 and 1281.

A new settlement emerged called Warszowa. Prince Konrad II built a brick church there. It was named St. John and became a cathedral.

The first historical record of a Warsaw castellan is from 1313. By the early 14th century Warsaw was a seat of the Dukes of Masovia. It became the capital of Masovia in 1413. Crafts and trade drove Warsaw’s economy.

In the 15th century the town expanded beyond its northern wall. A new settlement New Town appeared. The older settlement was then called Old Town. Both had their own charters and governments.
