In 1874, a locksmith named Paul Aberle built a house. This house, the Wilhelm Aberle House, still stands before you. It is considered one of the most magnificent buildings in the colony. Paul Aberle, a trader in iron products, built the house for himself. His business thrived at the Jaffa Gate. His son, Wilhelm, continued his success. Wilhelm was a wealthy businessman and even became the director of the Templar Association Bank. The Wilhelm Aberle House carries a beautiful inscription. Engraved on the lintel of the house is a verse from Psalms: “The LORD loveth the gates of Zion more than all the dwellings of Jacob.” This verse speaks to the deep connection felt by many to this place. The Wilhelm Aberle House has seen a lot of history. It even served as the headquarters for Israel’s prime ministers in the early years of the state. While several leaders used nearby offices, Ariel Sharon chose this building. He insisted on working from the same small office once used by David Ben-Gurion.
