“Wilk,” the Polish word for wolf. It echoes in the name of Wilgi. This residential street in Warsaw carries a history far older than many realize.

Wilgi’s story begins way back in the 14th century. At that time, it was just a simple road. It ran alongside fields belonging to the vogts of old Warsaw. This was well south of the city limits.

The Wilk family held the office of city vogt for much of the 15th century. Because of this, people started calling the road by their name. Initially, it was known as Wilcze or Na Wilczem. That translates to Wilks’ or At the Wilks’.

Over time, the real origin of the name faded from memory. People started associating it with the literal meaning of the surname. Wolf became the defining image, not the Wilk family.

In 1770, the Naming Commission officially approved the name Wilcza. So, Wilgi became its official name.

Imagine traveling back centuries. Picture open fields where houses now stand on Wilgi. Think about the slow transformation from rural path to residential street. Wilgi has silently witnessed Warsaw’s growth. It has been a part of the city.

Now, as we stand on Wilgi, consider its humble beginnings. It started as a nameless path. It evolved into a street named after a powerful family. Finally, it became known for the wolf.

The name reminds us of Warsaw’s past. The Wilk family once held sway. The fields are gone, replaced by homes. Yet, the name Wilgi remains. It is a lasting echo of history.

Take a moment to appreciate Wilgi’s journey. From a simple road to a named street. Wilgi embodies Warsaw’s evolving story.

So, when you walk down Wilgi, remember the wolves. Think of the Wilk family. Consider the fields that once stretched out here. This street is more than just a place to live. It is a pathway through time.

And that concludes our stop here at Wilgi. I hope you enjoyed discovering the hidden story behind this street’s name.
