The story of Wiener Neudorf begins long before the town’s official name was established in 1854. Standing here today, you may not imagine that thousands of years ago, people were already calling this place home. Evidence of settlement stretches back to 4000 BC, and the area was part of a bustling region throughout history. The first recorded reference to Wiener Neudorf, then known as Nowendorf, dates back to the mid-12th century. Wiener Neudorf was strategically positioned on a major trade route, making it an important crossroads for centuries. The name Wiener Neudorf itself came about in the early 19th century – ‘W’ was added to the name to distinguish it from other similarly named towns. The town experienced significant industrial growth in the 19th century, especially due to the abundance of clay used by the Neudorfer Ziegelwerke of Wienerberger. This prosperous period, however, was marked by the tragic events of World War II. During the Nazi era, Wiener Neudorf was incorporated into the 24th municipality of Vienna, and a subcamp of the Mauthausen concentration camp operated here. Wiener Neudorf became a hub for the production of aircraft engines, and prisoners were forced to work in the factory under brutal conditions. Wiener Neudorf has since emerged as a vibrant community, boasting a unique blend of history, industry, and a lively cultural scene. Today, while the echoes of war linger, the town is best known for its bustling Industriezentrum NÖ Süd, attracting businesses from all over Austria.
