A sprawling suburb. That’s Whitby. Imagine a place born from farmland in the 1960s. Whitby wasn’t always a bustling suburb. It was once 3180 acres of open land. A consortium bought it for a grand residential plan. They envisioned a North American style new town. A town with 16000 people. Four neighbourhoods were planned. Each would centre around a primary school.

However their ambitious plans faced a challenge. A 1974 town planning appeal hearing halved the number of planned neighbourhoods. Only two neighbourhoods remained: Adventure and Endeavour. These names reflect the spirit of exploration. This spirit draws inspiration from Captain James Cook. Cook’s first visit to New Zealand happened two hundred years before Whitby’s development. The bicentennial of his arrival inspired the nautical theme for Whitby’s streets. Names like Spinnaker Drive and Navigation Drive evoke this era.

The first homes appeared in 1970. By 1972 over 200 homes were occupied. By 1998 over 2000 homes had been built. The village centre and a golf course were developed too. A commuter bus service started in 1973. This early development of Whitby was environmentally conscious. It received the 1978 Environmental Award. This award recognised the consideration of environmental values in its planning.

Today Whitby thrives. It boasts modern amenities. The Whitby Shopping Centre is the commercial heart. It houses shops a medical centre a pharmacy and cafes. Whitby has also become a desirable place to retire. Its location next to the lakes adds to its appeal. Whitby Lakes is a perfect retirement location.

Whitby’s history is rich and layered. From farmland to a planned suburb. From early settlers to modern residents. The suburb’s growth reflects New Zealand’s journey. A journey from rural landscapes to modern suburbs. The story of Whitby is a testament to vision determination and community spirit. It’s a story still being written. A story you are a part of today.
