“Curious how Wheaton transformed from a simple crossroads to a bustling urban center?”

Wheaton is an unincorporated community in Montgomery County. Its story begins in the 1700s. Back then, it was just a crossroads. In the mid-1800s, it became Mitchell’s Crossroads. Richard T. Mitchell owned a tavern there. It sat at the corner of Brookeville Turnpike and Old Bladensburg Road.

The area’s first postmaster was war veteran George F. Plyer. He honored his commanding officer. In 1869, he renamed the post office Wheaton after General Frank Wheaton.

Wheaton has a rich history tied to important figures. General Frank Wheaton was a career officer. He served in the Union Army. He rose to major-general.

For many years, Wheaton was mostly farmland. After World War II, things changed. Wheaton expanded quickly. The first modern post office opened in 1947. The Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission added utilities. The Glenmont Water Tower was built just north of Wheaton.

Developers built up Wheaton. It became part of the suburbs of Washington, D.C. Today, Montgomery County governs Wheaton locally.

Downtown Wheaton is transforming. It is going from a residential suburb to an urban environment. Wheaton is now home to over 400 businesses. Its residential population is growing.

Take a stroll through Wheaton. You’ll notice its diverse community. Wheaton Regional Park offers green spaces.

Consider Wheaton’s Arts and Entertainment District designation. It supports local artists. It also stimulates cultural growth.
