Isn’t Whareroa Farm a fascinating blend of history, nature, and community spirit? When the Crown purchased this land in 1858, iwi were already living and cultivating east of the Whareroa swamp. The story of Whareroa is quite interesting.

Alexander MacKay and his family settled here in 1859. For many years, the MacKay family farmed this land. But in 1936, Arthur, the youngest son, sold it. His brother William’s share eventually went to the Public Trust and the Wellington Hospital Board.

Then came World War II. In May 1942, the government claimed Whareroa for defense. It became Camp MacKay, housing regiments of the 1st and 2nd Marine divisions. These US Marines trained and recuperated here during the Pacific campaign.

After the war, the Land and Survey Department transformed Whareroa. It became a recreational and educational farm park open to the public. However, in 1987, restructuring led to Landcorp managing Whareroa and closing it to the public.

In 1993, plans arose to subdivide the farm for private development. This sparked strong opposition. The Guardians of the Whareroa Farm formed in 1995. They launched a community campaign to save the land. Their efforts were successful. In 2005, the government purchased Whareroa. It transferred the land to the Department of Conservation.

Today, Whareroa Farm thrives as a recreation reserve. You can enjoy walking, picnicking, biking, and even horse-riding here. It links to the Akatarawa Forest and Queen Elizabeth Park. The Department of Conservation works with the Whareroa Guardians Community Trust to manage the reserve.

Volunteers are restoring native forest remnants, streams, and wetland areas. They are led by the Whareroa Guardians. About 180 hectares of Whareroa Farm remain a working sheep and cattle farm. However, this area is not open to the public.

Whareroa stands as a successful example of land managed for conservation, recreation, and farming. As you explore, notice the regenerating pasture and pockets of native bush. Follow the network of tracks. These tracks include the Camp Mackay Walkway. Whareroa Farm is a testament to community action and environmental stewardship.
