Long before Toronto’s skyline pierced the clouds Wexford existed. It started as a small farming community known as Hough’s Corners. This humble beginning near Lawrence and Pharmacy Avenues would transform. Richard Sylvester a County Wexford Ireland immigrant played a key role. He built the Rising Sun Inn at that intersection. In 1865 he established a post office. He named it Wexford after his homeland.

Wexford’s name stuck. The area grew. It transformed from farmland into the vibrant neighbourhood we see today. The original community’s legacy lives on. A few churches remain. Pioneers rest in their cemeteries. Some of the oldest houses stand as quiet witnesses.

Post-World War II spurred significant development. The 1950s brought a wave of construction. Story-and-a-half homes and bungalows became common. Apartment buildings both low and high-rise soon followed. The Chapel of St Jude stands tall. It showcases remarkable 175-year-old building techniques. It is a testament to Wexford’s enduring spirit.

Today Wexford offers a rich tapestry of experiences. It’s a family-friendly community with Wexford Collegiate School for the Arts. There’s the Gooderham Learning Centre for adults. The area has blossomed. It boasts numerous internationally themed restaurants. In summer the Taste of Lawrence food and culture festival brings even more excitement. Rides entertainment and vendors line the streets.

Wexford Park provides ample green space. It’s perfect for leisurely strolls. Mountain biking trails wind through it. Ellesmere Park nearby offers a playground. It’s ideal for families. Wayne Parkette adds another spot for recreation. These parks are a vital part of the community. They offer a sanctuary from the urban bustle.

The Wexford Soccer Club and the Scarborough Minor Hockey Association thrive here. Ellesmere Park’s skatepark provides fun for thrill-seekers. Wexford Collegiate Institute’s pool and gym are community resources. They host Toronto Parks Forestry and Recreation programs.

Getting around Wexford is easy. Bus stops connect to TTC subway lines. Major roadways such as Highway 401 and the Don Valley Parkway are nearby. Driving downtown takes approximately 25 minutes depending on traffic. Public transit including walking will take about an hour.

Wexford’s story is one of transformation and growth. From humble beginnings as a farming community to a thriving multicultural hub. Wexford embodies the spirit of Toronto.
