Ever wondered how Gollum’s unsettlingly realistic movements were achieved? Right here in front of us stands Weta FX a global powerhouse of visual effects and animation.

Weta FX isn’t just a name it’s a legacy. Founded in 1993 as Weta Digital this company started with a single computer. Its founders Peter Jackson Richard Taylor and Jamie Selkirk aimed to produce the digital effects for Heavenly Creatures. Little did they know they’d go on to revolutionize filmmaking.

Weta FX’s journey is one of innovation. The massive battles in The Lord of the Rings trilogy demanded a new level of technology. This led to the creation of MASSIVE a groundbreaking software capable of animating thousands of independent characters. For King Kong Weta FX developed CityBot an application that could build a 1933 New York cityscape shot by shot. Even King Kong’s fur required unique software. Millions of individual strands were simulated with wind and interactions with other surfaces. Each frame used two gigabytes of data.

For James Cameron’s Avatar Weta FX further adapted MASSIVE to bring Pandora’s flora and fauna to life. This collaboration resulted in some of cinema’s most breathtaking visuals. The film set a new standard for visual effects and helped redefine what was possible in the digital realm.

Over the years Weta FX developed numerous proprietary tools. Mari a texture painting application was later acquired by The Foundry Visionmongers. Barbershop a revolutionary grooming system made it easier to manipulate digital hair and won a Sci-tech award. Motion capture technology advanced as well allowing for location shooting as seen in Rise of the Planet of the Apes.

In 2021 Weta Digital’s VFX tools division was sold to Unity Technologies for a staggering US$1.625 billion. The visual effects company itself was rebranded as Weta FX. This marked a significant milestone in the company’s ongoing journey. A new Vancouver studio opened in 2022 expanding the company’s global reach.

Avatar The Way of Water showcased the latest advancements. Weta FX created over 3200 visual effects shots nearly 2200 involving water. New motion capture technology was used for underwater sequences. The digital water itself was created using Weta FX’s Loki simulation software.

Despite past challenges concerning workplace culture Weta FX continues to be a leader in visual effects. The company’s commitment to innovation and pushing boundaries remains a testament to its lasting impact on the film industry. Standing here before Weta FX we are standing in front of a place where movie magic is made.
