A sanctuary of faith nestled in Etobicoke Westway United Church stands tall. It’s a place of worship a beacon of community. Its story begins not in a grand cathedral but in a humble public school.
Westway United Church wasn’t always the beautiful structure we see today. In 1957 its first service was held at Westway Village Public School on Poynter Avenue. Imagine the scene. Simple pews perhaps. The scent of freshly waxed floors. The excited chatter of a new congregation forming. The promise of a future together.
Officially constituted on February 27 1958 the church quickly outgrew its temporary home. A portable building served as a temporary sanctuary from August 3 1958 to October 15 1961. Think of the challenges. The limitations of space. The resilience of the community. The unwavering faith that fueled their growth.
Then in 1967 a new sanctuary rose. The one we admire today at 8 Templar Drive. A permanent testament to the enduring spirit of Westway United Church. This building became more than just a place of worship. It became a community hub. The Westway United Church Food Bank operates here offering sustenance and support. Countless community groups use its spaces for meetings classes and more.
A unique part of its history is the Beaver Bible Class. Founded in 1928 at Westmoreland United Church it found a home at Westway United Church in 1986. For many years it provided spiritual nourishment and fellowship. While the class no longer meets its legacy lives on. It’s a reminder of the enduring connections forged within these walls.
Westway United Church continues to serve its community. Its mission “Seeking justice loving kindness as we walk humbly with God” guides its actions. It stands as a testament to faith community and perseverance. A place where history unfolds and hope blossoms. A place you are welcome to explore.
