From humble beginnings in a farmhouse kitchen sprang Westminster Presbyterian Church. This wasn’t just any church. It began as Isabella Walton’s Sunbeam Mission Band. In 1918 Isabella started a Sunday school. It quickly outgrew her kitchen. The community rallied. They built a clapboard building. This became the foundation of Westminster Presbyterian Church. Isabella deeded her property to the Presbyterian Church in Canada in 1958.
Westminster Presbyterian Church stands as a testament to Isabella’s faith and generosity. Her legacy lives on. Today a unique facility stands in its place. Walton Place houses Isabella Walton Childcare Centre. There are also apartments and the current Westminster Church building. The iBeams a children’s musical band celebrate the church’s history. This is a nod to Isabella’s original Sunbeam Mission Band.
The church’s journey wasn’t always smooth. Initially known as Todmorden Presbyterian Church. It was built in 1921. A devastating fire struck in 1931. The congregation rebuilt. The new church was dedicated in 1936. It’s a larger more modern building. It included crucial amenities like bathrooms and a kitchen. Westminster Presbyterian Church became its official name then. This reflects its growth and stability. The old building was demolished. The 1936 building still serves the congregation.
