Wondering where to find the largest shopping and entertainment center in Vienna? It is the Westfield Donau Zentrum. This isn’t just a shopping center. It’s a destination.

The Westfield Donau Zentrum first opened its doors in 1975. Back then, it was a modest 22800 square meters. Today, it boasts over 100000 square meters of retail space. The entire complex covers approximately 225000 square meters. This includes the Kitchen restaurant area.

Since its opening, the Westfield Donau Zentrum has expanded several times. A major expansion and rebuilding project occurred between 2009 and 2010. In autumn 2021, Donau Zentrum officially became Westfield Donau Zentrum.

In October 2010, a new section opened. It added over 60 new shops and 28000 square meters of retail space. A striking sculpture named Sonnenstrahl was also unveiled. This 38-meter-high artwork complements the water drop design on the building’s exterior. The front of the center, facing the Kagran U-Bahn station, features LED panels. These panels can change color.

Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield invested heavily in the expansion. Around 105 million euros went into the shopping center’s enlargement. An additional 45 million euros modernized the existing structure. The architectural design comes from London-based Dunnett Craven and Viennese architect Franz Riedl.

In 2012, the Kitchen catering area underwent renovation. The upgrade included more dining options and improved cinemas with IMAX technology.

The Westfield Donau Zentrum has faced challenges. In March 2019, a fire broke out. The fire brigade declared a level 4 alert. Four shops, a vet’s office, and a plasma center sustained damage. Construction work likely caused the fire. Another fire occurred in the roof in April 2020. Fortunately, most shops were closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. No civilians were harmed in either incident.

Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield owns the Westfield Donau Zentrum. They acquired 90 percent of the shares in 2003 for 270 million euros.

Getting here is easy. The U1 subway line connects directly to the center since 1982. Tram line 25 and several bus lines also provide access.

Inside, you will find around 262 shops, service providers, and restaurants. The Kitchen adds 13 cinemas to the mix. The Westfield Donau Zentrum attracts approximately 19 million visitors each year. It also employs 3000 people.

Before you head inside, take a moment to appreciate the scale of the Westfield Donau Zentrum. It is a testament to Vienna’s vibrant commercial landscape. Go on. Explore the shops and enjoy the entertainment.
